Believe'N'Succeed Returns in Style
Saturday, 21 February 2009
Group winner Believe'N'Succeed made a triumphant return to the track with a highly impressive all the way win in the $80,000 Variety the Children's Charity Handicap (1000m) at Moonee Valley tonight.

The win was a welcome change of luck for top Flemington horseman Mark Kavanagh after he was forced to spell stable star Maldivian after he was struck down with a minor tendon injury.

"You have to roll with the punches in this game mate," Kavanagh said after the race.

It was a sense of relief for the Fred Hoysted Medallist winner who was saddling up Believe'N'Succeed for the first time since last year's Blue Diamond Stakes when she ran a gallant fourth.

The filly was having her first run since throat surgery was discovered when she returned to the stable last year for a spring campaign.

"She's pretty talented," Kavanagh said. "It's hard enough to get a good horse and then to have problems."

"But to get her back and have a win after a year off is a pretty big thrill."

Kavanagh was particularly pleased with how the group winner found the line considering she was pressured for much of the race by Solchow - a runner who weakened badly in the straight to finish eighth.

"She was feeling it a bit at the end, but she was softened up early too," Kavanagh pointed out.

"It was a pretty good effort and she will improve from that as well," he added.

"After a year off you'd think she'd keep on improving now. I was pretty happy with that (win)."

Kavanagh has a race picked out for Believe'N'Succeed down the famous Flemington straight for her second up effort.

"There's an 1100 metre three-year-old fillies race on the 7th of March at Flemington and she should make some good improvement from this race tonight."

Winning rider Michael Rodd was a little surprised at how the daughter of Exceed and Excel came back under him during the event.

"It was twelve months to the day, well eve, since last year's Blue Diamond when she ran a cracking race," Rodd commented.

"She's had a few little problems. She's very one dimensional. She just gets out and runs and she's also very little."

"She does it the hard way. What you see is what you get."

"Normally she wants to get out and charge along, but tonight she came back underneath me for the first time which I was surprised about."

"She might be two dimensional now - not just one dimensional."

"I still think there's plenty up her sleeve," Rodd summed up.

At the post Believe'N'Succeed ($3-$3.70-$3.40 fav) held a short head margin over the talented South Australian visitor Outlandish Lad ($9-$11).

Third home was the big betting ring drifter Zizz ($2.50-$6) another length back.

Believe'N'Succeed is turning out a great money spinner for connections after being purchased by Kavanagh from the 2007 Magic Millions Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast for $300,000.

Her earnings from just four starts have shot to $178,500. Her current residual value is plenty more and her earnings should only increase over coming starts.

Blinkers Off Works For Dr Doute's
Saturday, 01 November 2008

Last week, one of the keys to Mark Kavanagh winning the Cox Plate with Maldivian was putting blinkers on him.

Today, Kavanagh attributes the success of Dr Doute's in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes to taking them off.

As rider Michael Rodd explained:

"He had the blinkers on early because he gets so lost."

"But with them on you just can't hold him."

One of the horses whose progress is followed by members of the Mark Kavanagh Racing Club, Dr Doute's ($3.50-$3.60-$3.20F) came from last to win narrowly from the Danny O'Brien trained Lucky Thunder ($10-$11-$9.50) with a length to Millbank ($5.00-$6.50) in third place.

Winning races with a horse like Dr Doute's is to know what to do with the various bits of gear at the disposal of the trainer according to Kavanagh.

"He had his first start without blinkers", Kavanagh explained.

"We whacked blinkers on him when he won at Moonee Valley."

"Then he pulled a bit hard when he won here at Flemington and the saddle slipped and we decided to take the blinkers off."

Dr Doute's ran fourth at Caulfield in the Gothic Stakes without blinkers.

"Last time he was a bit wayward and this time he was spot on", Kavanagh said.

Knowing what gear to use is obviously important but so also is placing a horse to advantage. Kavanagh explained that he chose to aim Dr Doute's a little lower than stablemate Whobegotyou, knowing that he was even more immature.

"We set him for this after the Winter", Kavanagh said.

"It was just a run under the Guineas and the Derby and mentally we couldn't force him into pressure races so this was the race we chose for him."

"This was the race we targeted and he's arrived."

Even though he was dropped to the tail of the field by Michael Rodd for most of the race, Dr Doute's raced quite erratically.

"Through the race I was back where I was and I was in a lot of trouble the whole race", Rodd said.

"I couldn't really hold him and I was all over the heels of the horse in front of me."

"I was happy to start sliding at the 600."

Rodd, who rides both Dr Doute's and Whobegotyou in trackwork, believes that Dr Doute's has plenty of potential once he learns what he should be doing.

"Early doors we were putting him up against Whobegotyou", he said.

"He's very untapped this bloke."

"He's just a slow learner and he's still learning what its all about."

"He got to the front and Danny O'Briens horse got up inside of us and my bloke just pulled up."

"He thought it was over."

"Once I clicked him up a bit more he just changed gears and moved away."

Having accomplished his Spring objective, Kavanagh plans to send Dr Doute's for a spell.

"He's not a bad horse this bloke and you might hear more from him in the Autumn", he said.

"I reckon he'll go for a spell now".

A $150,000 purchase by Kavanagh at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, Dr Doute's is by Redoute's Choice from the Dr Grace mare No Limit.

He is the first stakes winner in his family for five generations, although No Limit was stakes placed second in the Scone Racing Club Dark Jewel Classic at Listed level.

Best Day Ever For Kav
Sunday, 26 October 2008

Maldivian & Mark KavanaghCox Plate Day 2008 will go down as the best in history for Mark Kavanagh.

Winning the Cox Plate with Maldivian, AAMI Vase with Whobegotyou and the Jayco Crystal Mile with Sea Battle is a major achievement for Mark and his team.

And let's not forget Queen's Kiss in Adelaide, making it 4 winners from 5 runners on the day.

As Kav Club members will know from their regular weekly reports, Mark has gone into every one of Maldivian's races this season expecting him to run a good race.

However well documented problems with his breathing (getting his tongue back) prevented Maldivian from putting in his best performance at the business end of a race.

The addition of a tongue tie solved that problem, so all that was left was to switch on Maldivian so he would feel like winning again.

Again the addition of blinkers and a bit of jumping did the trick.
